Frequently Asked Questions

Because you enjoy the outdoors and in turn Mother Nature’s company.
MONA gives your food scraps a purpose that benefits both you and our planet. By recycling your food scraps you will:

  • Earn free finished compost every spring to nourish your plants and gardens!
  • Create renewable energy to power our communities by using state-of-the-art anaerobic digestion. Science!
  • Rejuvenate soils that are disappearing at an alarming rate. The U.N. estimates at our current rate of destruction the world only has roughly 60 years of soil remaining. Healthy soil has an enormous impact on our environment; it gives life to eco-systems that our animal friends rely on, grows food to feed our families, strengthens our forests, protects our watersheds, and reduces floods & droughts.
  • Sequester toxic gasses, counteracting the greenhouse effect and in turn enriching the soil. Mother Nature is pretty neat!
  • Support local farmers who feel the increasing pressure from corporations to sell and develop their land. By providing farmers with additional income through compost and energy generation we’re empowering them to continue feeding our communities, and enhancing our natural habitats both physically and aesthetically!
  • Save money in towns with pay-per-bag regulations and/or paid trash collection services. Some of our customers are now down to one (stink-free) bag of trash a month!

The alternative? When your food is mixed with trash it serves no future benefit; it’s trucked to landfills and incinerators where it either rots or is burned releasing toxins such as methane (30 times more lethal than carbon dioxide).
Let’s trash the alternative

A lot…here are just a few examples

  1. Tons of Waste
The USDA estimates Americans typically waste over 40 million tons of food (30-40% of total food supply) a year, with just 6.3% diverted from landfills and incinerators, where it serves no future benefit.
  2. Harmful Emissions
When food rots in a landfill it emits methane. Methane is approximately 30 times more potent as a heat trapping gas than carbon dioxide (the greenhouse gas the people are most familiar with). If food waste were a country, it would come in 3rd (after the United States and China) in terms of impact to global warming.
  3. Out of Pocket Cost
Business or residence, less food being hauled by the trash man means more money in your pocket, whether it be through direct savings or local taxes. The case for saving money holds especially true as more and more communities implement pay-per-trash-bag rules. The average trash bag in the U.S. consists of 40% food, and food ain’t light. If your current trash hauler isn’t willing to adjust the fees due to the reduced weight from working with MONA, we can provide the names of other trash haulers who would be happy to work with you.
  4. Opportunity Cost
Mixing your food scraps with trash forgoes you the opportunity to give your food a future purpose that benefits both Mother Nature and everyone that surrounds her. More specifically, when you mix food with your trash you miss out on the opportunity to rejuvenate soils, sequester greenhouse gasses, revitalize eco-systems, support local farms and create renewable energy to power our communities. Let’s put your food to work and get rewarded for it — every subscription includes free compost in the spring to nourish your gardens and plants!
  5. Regulations
In this case the environmentally friendly thing to do could also be the legal thing to do. In Massachusetts, regulations ban disposal of food and other organic wastes from businesses and institutions that dispose of more than one ton of these materials per week. Massachusetts isn’t alone either, effective July 1, 2020 Vermont is required to divert all food waste from landfills.

All food and plants are welcome in our bins
Meat, bones, fish, shells, vegetables, fruits, dairy, coffee, aunt Cheryl’s banana gravy pie, we take all food…good or bad. We also accept coffee filters, teabags (staple removed please), plants and flowers.

We require your food/plants to be bagged in BPI Compostable bags.

You bet! Every spring customers are offered free finished compost to nourish their gardens and plants!

Don’t want compost? No problem, we’ll donate it to a local garden on your behalf!

In summary it helps save the planet. Through our network of local farms and digesters the food is recycled into compost to rejuvenate soils, sequester greenhouse gasses, revitalize eco-systems, support local farms and create renewable energy to power our communities. Let’s put your food to work.

No worse (and probably better) than what you currently experience. The thing to remember is no new food or smell is being brought into the equation. The food you currently toss in the trash is going to be separated into a capped bin. The smell will likely be reduced because you’ll be able to easily identify who delt it and remove it from the interior of your home. Also, most counter-top compost bins (sold separately) include charcoal to absorb and reduce the smell. Smell ya later food scraps!

Our mission.

We’re here to inspire the preservation, conservation and renewal of Earth’s natural resources.

The best spot for the bin on collection day is on the curb in front of your home or business. If you have difficulty getting it to the curb (e.g. you’re elderly or injured), we’re flexible–just let us know!

Residential and Events:
We accept most major credit/debit cards through our secure online interface.

Commercial:
We can create a custom billing plan to satisfy your particular needs.

First off, if you’re already recycling your food scraps or have another company taking care of it for you, MONA thanks you. You’re already working toward our mission, case closed.

However, if you’re still itching to know why mom thinks we’re so special, please see below…

  1. Mother Nature
When you choose us, you choose Mother Nature. At the root of all our decisions you’ll find Mother Nature, and what’s in her best long-term interest
  2. Free Finished Compost
Every spring we offer free finished compost to our customers to nourish their gardens and plants
  3. Operational Excellence
Our team doesn’t take themselves all that seriously (insert dad joke here), but they are incredibly talented and dedicated to their mission and customers. We’re experts in identifying and eliminating waste, and are laser focused on doing so in the name of Mother Nature
  4. Adaptable Solutions
Our operation doesn’t rely on one solution, but many. We work with a network of local farms, digesters and experts to reduce waste and recycle food into compost & energy using the most efficient processes available
  5. Investment
We need you. Laying our cards on the table, MONA’s success relies heavily on her ability to scale. More specifically, on her ability to serve as many homes and businesses as possible. Every subscription is an investment in Mother Nature and an essential local business that wants to do right by her. Your investment will empower MONA to expand services and products beyond food-scrap collections to achieve our mission of eliminating toxic emissions from the global waste-stream. This is why our costs are low, our interfaces simple, and our service high–we need you, we need your friends, and we need industries both big and small. We need everyone.
