Sustainability startup seeks to such more

NEWBURYPORT, MA — A local man’s composting startup is just the beginning in his quest to create a more sustainable world.

Ted Lague, a Newburyport resident with a background in management consulting, has always loved the outdoors. In January 2020, he started thinking about what he could do to help the environment while educating others. Soon enough, MONA Environmental was born with “MONA” short for Mother Nature, he explained.

“The mission of the company is to inspire the preservation, the conservation and the renewal of earth’s natural resources,” Lague said. In pursuing this mission, Lague said food waste seemed to be one of the biggest problems, so he built the company around addressing that issue.

An unlikely source of environmental activism

I spent much of my youth dreaming about cars, motorcycles and boats, especially wooden Chris-Crafts from the 1940s. In fact, by age ten I had bought my first yacht of sorts, a teal MirroCraft for $5 with holes plugged by the previous owner’s bubble-gum. He was a Dubble Bubble man if I remember correctly. By 13 my parents allowed me to buy my first car after I made honor-roll (the driving force behind my good grades); an unregistered red 1988 Saab 900S with 188k miles and rust-hole-air-conditioning.

The joy of these vehicles as well as the many that followed certainly revolved around the engineering, but equally so the natural environment that surrounded me while enjoying them. Whether I realized that as an adolescent is debatable, but my passion for vehicles and their impact to the environment none-the-less has had a great deal of influence over my present awareness, affection, and duty to protect Mother Nature...click here to continue reading
